After the 2nd diaspora, Jews scattered throughout the Gentile world formed their new identity based on the Torah and the Synagogue. The Synagogue is the most important symbol of physical identity against the Gentiles. In this context, the classic symbol of late antiquity is the Duro Europos Synagogue in Syria. In artistic terms, it is unique in the history of the Synagogue. The Synagogue bears traces of all artistic phenomena from Jewish, Roman, Persian and Hellenistic cultures.
